Stablemates appeal in double at Waimate

Bv W. R. CARSTON

Rex Cochrane has made many successful “raids" at Waimate and in Double D'Or and My Friend Blue the Gore trainer will be saddling a likely combination for the Waimate Racing/ club's T.A.B. double tomorrow

Double D'Or will.be trying to improve on a promising string of minor placings over the middle distances lately in the first leg,-the Waimate Cup. My Friend Blue, which has earned top marks for consistency, will be going for his third win of the season against the sprinters in the DB Sprint Handicap. Since she was switched to racing over the longer journeys in the Tapanui Cup early last month Double D'Or has had four starts for four thirds. Two starts back she was involved in a close finish with Firefly and Just A Rebel in the Waikouaiti Cup and last time out beat all but Powley and The Dimple in the N.Z. Aluminium Smelter Stakes at gillAlthough Double D'Or will not have to cope with rivals of their calibre tomorrow, victory is unlikely to come easy from a wide draw on Waimate's tight circuit. Despite his 57 kg Kopara is sure to come in for solid backing. He has come up with winning runs at Invercargill and Omakau. at his last two attempts and both were over the Waimate Cup distance of 2000 m. The Riccarton stablemates. Amatrice and The Crofter, will both be going for their third win on end. and Shardak, Josie, Taramoa and Dellana are others with sound form close up on their records capable of getting into the finish. My Friend Blue, whose last five starts have yielded two seconds. tw*o wins and. from all accounts, an unlucky fourth last time out, is one of the obvious second-leg choices.

But for all his good form the Gore-trained four-year-old might not have things all his own way. Decor Doll, the winner of her last three on end. is likely to run tomorrow’s 1200 m as well as any and better than most, and for all his 58kg Gold Refrain, too. is likely to be heavilv involved in the finish.

Among the others Country Scene appeals as much as any. He does not run them all’ alike but came up with

QUINELLA WAIMATE CUP $5000: 2000 m I 1611 Kopara 4 57.0 Has won three of his last four races in style and should be top chance again from handy draw here. S. . Allen. 2. 7076 Sweeney Todd 8 "54.5 Form has slipped a shade lately but has a good record on the provincial courses so could not be dismissed lightly. 3 869 Rosie's Boy 9 54.0 Pretty useful at best but has vet to show anything worthwhile this time up. M. Kennedy. 4 4514 Shardak 7 54.0 Has pretty useful record as a sprinter but would have to be taken on trust at this distance. H. Goscomb. 5 3333 Double D'Or 11 53.5 Marked improvement in her form since being switched to middle-distance racing. Sure to be high on the list of fancied runners. J. Collett. 6 2644 Josie 13 53.5 Another whose latest efforts have been marked by consistency. Certainly would not be the least of chances. D. Frye. 7 4546 Maunday Money 2 53.0 Continues to run her races out strongly but this is hard course for those inclined to get back in the running. G. Blair. 8 9846 Jonboy Hunt 12 52.5 Has been battling lately to improve record. Seems to prefer softer ground than he has had to cope with recently. T. Matthews. 9 1211 Amatrice 1 52.5 Recent record in the lower grades has been firstclass. This will be tougher test but could measure up. 10 3062 Taramoa 3 52.5 Has been shaping well over the sprint distances lately and could make things interesting here from his place in the weights and a handv draw. II 0443'Dellana 10 52.0 Showed some improvement on recent campaign in the south so must come into reckoning as a likely placegetter. 12 2211 The Crofter 6 52.0 Came up with middledistance wins at Washdyke and Waikouaiti during the holidays. This is harder but in right place in weights to keep his record moving. R. Hewin-

son. 13 6804 All Smiles 5 51.5 Improved showing in spring at Omoto last Friday but hard to imagine her winning this on recent form all-round. L. Dobbs

Getting up -in weights but could still be hard to beat. L. Dobbs. 2 7273 Country Scene 7 52.5 Finding it hard to break through for a win but has gone one or two useful races lately and must rate a chance on his home course. G. Blair. 3 2111 Decor Doll 4 51.0 Speedy mare which has won her fast three on the trot. Up a grade here but could still give the best of the others plenty to do. T. Matthews. 4 5528 Apple Roona 1 50.5 Runner-up to Gold Refrain at Kumara last Saturday week but form otherwise has been very moderate for quite some time. D. Frye. 5 5986 Final Surge 6 50.5 Switching back to sprinting after an unsuccessful campaign lately over the longer journeys. R. Bruce. 6 2114 My Friend Blue 5 50.5 Has managed sprint distances successfully twice and has been placed in three of his other four starts this season. Should be one of top chances. P. Richards. 7 5560 Frontiniac 8 50.0 Would have to improve out of sight on anything he has done lately to be considered a winning prospect. J. Killick. 8 1598 Geordie’s Girl 9 50.0 Won two 1200 m sprints in the lower grades last month but form has slumped meantime. Well beaten twice over this distance at Omakau earlier this month. 9 0003 Hunting The Snark 11 50.0 Last-start third among the lower grade sprinters at Kurow early in month has been only show of form this time up.' 10 3790 Scotch Dream 3 50.0 Placed twice over middle distances during the holiday facing but has done nothing meantime to suggest he will get 1200 m successfully. 11 0600 Show Town 10 50.0 Form all-round this season has been too bad to even rate consideration.

one of his better runs among the sprinters at Omakau last time out and has the advantage this time of racing on his home course.
