Literacy staff sought
PA Auckland The Adult Literacy Scheme, comprising about 90 groups throughout New Zealand. wants more Government support. It wants more paid coordinators to run literacy schemes, which teach thousands of adults to read and write each year. The Education Department pays a minimum number of co-ordinators, hut the remainder are voluntary.
The organisations co-ordi-nator for Auckland. Mrs June Matthews, said that the growing demand for literacy schemes required more paid staff.
The matter is likely to be raised at the first national literacy seminar to be held at Napier in April.
