Doctor’s removal demanded
PA Wellington The Women's National Abortion Action Campaign yesterday called for a NewPlymouth doctor to be struck off the Medical Register for taking out a court injunction against a girl being granted an abortion.
An interim order suspending the girl's abortion certificate was granted by Mr Justice Bisson in an cx-parte hearing at Hamilton earlier this month.
On Wednesday Dr Melvin Wall, a Taranaki Hospital Board pediatrician, asked the Court to review the abortion certificate granted by two New Plymouth doctors acting as certifying consultants to see if proper grounds for the abortion existed.
But Mr Justice Speight rejected the application, saving the Contraception. Sterilisation and Abortion Act did not give the High Court the right to review decisions made by certifying consultants.
A W.O.N.A.A.C. spokesman. Mrs Diane Cleary, said that Dr Wall had committed an unacceptable breach of confidence and must be struck off the Medical Register.
"Further cases can be expected incurring dangerous delays, and discouraging consultants from taking jobs," she said.
