Labour delays Taupo move
PA Wellington The Labour Party has delayed until next week its decision on contesting the vote count in the Taupo electorate by electoral petition. The party's president, Mr J. P, Anderton, said after a meeting of the Labour
executive yesterday, that the party wanted to seek more legal advice before deciding whether to have one more trv at retrieving Taupo, held for National by Mr R. N. McLav bv onlv 14 votes. The party has already tried to win the seat back for the defeated Mr J. W. Ridley
through a District Court recount of votes. An electoral petition could cost more than $lO,OOO. The petition must be lodged by Friday. The party wants advice on the prospect of challenges to the validity of votes — those which were accepted during
tbc judicial recount and those which were ruled out.
"There are sufficient votes involved to alter the result,” Mr Anderton said. But the party wanted to check the combination of the votes and the likelihood of them changing.
