Live fruit fly found

PA Wellington Live fruit fly maggots were found in two pomegranates seized from a passenger at Auckland Airport. The maggots were found to be the larvae of Mediterranean fruit fly. a Ministry of Agriculture (Plant Health) officer. Mr Jim Currie, said yesterday. He said that the Ministry believed that the chances of medfly and other fruit flies coming into New Zealand in this way were considerably greater than they were from controlled commercial shipments. “The Californian citrus fruit coming into New Zealand at present can come only from regions where permit conditions are closely supervised. The chances of fruit fly reaching New Zealand with these consignments are remote." Mr Currie said. “But the record of interceptions of live fruit fly maggots confirms that the casual import by unsuspecting passengers is the real threat."
