Imitation cheese soon
NZPA-Reuter Tokyo Imitation cheese made from vegetable oil would be put on the Japanese market for the first time in March, the Miyosho Oil and Fat Company, said yesterday. Japan’s top maker of margarine and shortenings, in a joint venture with Schreiver Foods, of Wisconsin, would try to explore the demand for commercial use with its low price as a significant strategy in competition with natural cheese, a company spokesman said. Plans called
for development of the imitation cheese for general consumer use. The company would market the imitation cheese between $2.77 and $3.36 a kilogram under the trademark of Emarine. The target for initial sales was 1000 tonnes a year, he said. Japanese annual consumption of cheese was estimated at 100,000 tonnes last year. About 80 per cent of demand for natural cheese is for the pizza business.
