Briton freed by S.A.

NZPA London A British engineer, Steven Kitson, has been released from jail in Johannesburg after being held for six days, the British Foreign Office has said. Mr Kitson. aged 25. from Bristol, was detained after visiting his father David, aged 52, who is serving the eighteenth year of a 20-year sentence for opposing apartheid. Steven was accused of making sketches of Pretoria Prison, which could have been used in an escape attempt. Informed sources said he was expected home today, but the Foreign Office refused to give details, saying he had requested no publicity.

Diplomatic sources in Johannesburg said that Mr Kitson was on a plane for London. ' A British Consulate spokeswoman in Johannesburg said that as far as she knew no charges had been made.

Mr Kitson, who works for Rolls-Royce, had been held at the Compol headquarters and interrogation centre of the South African security police in Johannesburg. A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are very pleased at his release from detention, but we are not certain of the precise terms.”
