‘Pakistan prisoners killed’
NZPA London Torture and execution of political prisoners had increased in Pakistan as the authorities removed the power to protect human rights from the civilian courts. Amnesty International said yesterday. The London-based organisation issued a report titled "Pakistan: human rights violations and the decline of the rule of law." It said that thousands of people had been arrested simply for expressing their opinions. Hundreds of people, including some political prisoners, were executed each year, the report said. While there had been abuses of human rights in Pakistan for years, the report went on. the situation had deteriorated further, especially in the last year. A crucial point in the erosion of the powers of civilian courts was reached with a constitutional amendment of March last year which effectively annulled the 1973 Constitution and its guarantees of fundamental rights.
