Mass wedding
The biggest collective wedding ceremony reported by the Chinese official press has united nearly 700 couples at Tianjin. 150 km east of Peking, the "Chinese Youth" newspaper has reported. After the ceremony the 696 young couples planted trees in response to a recent appeal by the Prime Minister (Mr Zhao Ziyang). the paper said. Collective wedding ceremonies are encouraged by the Chinese official press, which has described them as a means to combat costly ceremonies.—Peking.
