‘Railway station’ restaurant planned
It is full steam ahead with plans to build a new Christchurch restaurant modelled on a nineteenth century railway station.
The Dunedin-based wine and spirit wholesale firm, Wilson Neill. Ltd, expects construction to start within a few months on the restaurant, sited next-door to its Fitzgerald Avenue outlet. Authenticity will be the keynote of the venture which is modelled on the company’s successful Carnarvon Station restaurant in Dunedin.
The manager of Carnarvon Station, Mr K. B. Wood, who will assist with development, said that the exact cost had not been fixed although its Dunedin counterpart cost $1 million.
Restored railway carriages with plush velvet furnishings and brass fittings will provide seating for about 300. The company already has two locomotives but 'is looking for several more, plus a small locomotive and other railway relics.
"The locomotive is simply for children to play on," said Mr Wood. Railway’ enthusiast clubs are a. likely source of artefacts but he also hopes that local residents will find such items as carriage lamps to go on display. The many tourists in Christchurch is one reason that has made Wilson Neill hopeful its restaurant will be a success. Staff will cater especially for toutists and families.
