McCormick to coach Albion
Fergie McCormick, who throughout his long rugbyplaying career was associated with Linwood, will be giving another club the benefit of his experience next winter.
McCormick has been appointed sole coach of the Albion senior team, replacing Brent Ramsay and Lyn Sparks who worked in partnership last season.
This will be McCormick's first time as a club coach. Since he retired in 1977 he has had three seasons as a Canterbury Colts selector and. last year, he selected, and coached, the Canterbury B team.
He was among the beaten candidates for the position of Canterbury selector-coach next winter, a job which
went to his long-time playing colleague, Alex Wyilie.
McCormick said yesterday that he had been approached some time ago by Albion and after giving the matter some thought he had decided to make himself available. "I don’t know many of the players — in fact, only three to speak to — but Albion seems to be a go ahead club and there is obviously a lot of potential there. I hope I can be of some value.” It is many years since Albion was ranked among the top senior teams. Its last senior championship was in 1941 and last winter it finished 11th of the 16 teams in the C.S.B. Cup first round. It wifi be interesting to see what difference McCormick makes.
