NZPA-Reuter Peking The Shanghai town clock is once again chiming the passing hours after 15 years of silence, the English language "China Daily” has reported. The Chinese “Big Ben.” built in 1927, was stopped at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution in 1966 because its British-made carillon was considered a symbol of “imperialist influence." ■ The carillon is still not I working, but the clockworks were reconditioned at the end of the year, the “China Daily” said.
