Mares favoured for cup at Wellington tonight
Special correspondent Wellington Bonnie’s Chance broke a 10- year drought for mares in the Wellington Cup with her win last year. This evening Sweet Jessica and Delightful Lady, both mares, look set to fight out the finish of the §20.000 feature. Sweet Jessica is a stablemate of last year's cup winner Bonnie’s Chance. She is a five-year-old and has only a C 8 assessment. On the other hand Delightful Lady’s record speaks for itself. She is in her last season of racing and has a record second to none when compared with any other in commission.
Sweet Jessica is in fine form at present. She was second in her last two starts, the first when equal second behind Dundas in the Ashburton Cup. the latter when distanced by Bonnie’s Chance in the New Zealand Standardbred Breeders' Stakes at Addington on New Years Dav.
Transport problems prevented Sweet Jessica from a first night start, but those problems have been solved and she arrived in Wellington yesterday afternoon. While she has age on her side. Sweet Jessica may have to play second fiddle "to the brilliant black Auckland mare Delightful Lady. Delightful Lady weakened over the last 200 m in Saturday's Innes Schweppes Handicap. That run could have only improved her and she looks capable of giving most of her rivals a start of 25m and beating them. Cyllarus’s front-running tactics won him the Innes Schweppes Handicap on Saturday. It is however, doubtful if he will be allowed to
set such an easy pace this evening. His rivals on Saturday took the chance that they could outsprint him — they lost — and it would be a brave man that would adopt similar tactics this evening. Calm Flight, along with Sweet Jessica, is a newcomer to the meeting. Six starts back Calm Flight beat a stronger field than this in the Rondel Handicap at Alexandra Park. His trainer and driver. John MacQuibban, was not happy with the 10m handicap his horse received in the cup. but left early yesterday morning enroute for Hutt Park.
Greg Robinson and El Regale filled the minor placings behind Cyllarus on Saturday. Neither damaged their prospects for this evening’s race with those efforts and a win by either would not come as a surprise. Local stables won one race on the opening night of the meeting and they could land another this evening with
Arania Scott, a contender for the Lion Breweries Pace, second leg of the T.A.B. double. Arania Scott has won two of his last five races and was a fine fourth behind Sugar Ray Robinson in the corresponding race on Saturday. He was left in the wake of Sugar Ray Robinson when he split the field with 700 m to run but once wound up in the last 500 m put in a spirited run to take fourth spot. Last Fame.
