Steam tug excursions popular at Akaroa

The steam tug Lyttelton is likely to spend Christmas and New' Year in Akaroa annually after the outstanding success of the latest trip. Both holidymakers and locals had stood in long queues to get aboard the stately old tug for each steam around the Akaroa Harbour, said the president of

the Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society. Mr Grant Robinson. "We had 17 passengers on the first outing when we went over there last year. This year we had 70." said Mr Robinson. Because of the tremendous public response, the trip to Akaroa was likely to become an annual event.

Captain J.’F. E. Crawford, a Lyttelton Harbour Board pilot, took the tug Lyttelton over on Boxing Day and brought her back on January 5. About 60 members of the tug preservation society, including deckhands, engine room and stokehold hands, galley staff and people to run the souvenir shop, camped at the Akaroa High School while performing the labour of love which made the trip possible. The tug needs a crew of 19 to run her and two complete crews had to be taken to Akaroa. The Lyttelton had bunkered for the trip with .40 tons of coal which had to be lugged aboard sack by sack, she devoured most of it. "It is not cheap to run her with coal at about $lOO a ton. but we covered our costs. We were very happv." said Mr Robinson. ' ARRIVAL ACT 3 (8.30 a m ). 23.818. Auckland (Blueport).
