Japan introduces big passenger ship
In these days when the passenger Liner has been steadily going out of fashion, except for short island cruises and the occasional ocean voyage, Japan has taken the bold step of converting what was an exhibition trade vessel into a full-fleuged passenger liner. Last week, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd, put into service the Ship Sakura Maru, now Japan’s largest ocean-going passenger liner. She was originally built as an international floating exhibition vessel in 1972 and for nearly 10 years sailed to ports all over the world to help promote trade between Japan and other countries. She was retired in July, . 1980. ' . . Mitsui O.S.K. bought the ship from the Japan Industry Floating Fair Association in December, 1980, and ordered Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to convert her into a 16,500-tonne luxury passenger liner. She becomes the first international ocean-going passenger liner to be built in Japan. With a length of 176 m, she has 142 cabins and can carry 552 passengers. In addition, she has a '520-seat multi-purpose hall with /cinema screen and stage. Diesel powered,. she has a service speed of 16 knots. ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (7.54 a m.) 2500, Auckland (S.C.N.Z.).
