Bowls Linwood I retains Div. one three-fours title

Linwood I has, as expected, retained the division one threefours bowls title. It had yet another eight-point win in the last round on Saturday to finish with the impressive total of 52, only four-off the possible.'

Second, nine points away on 43. was South Brighton 11, which got up in the final round to pip Linwood 111 (42). Burnside I was fourth on 39 and then followed Spreydon I (35), Edgeware I (33) and Woolston W.M.C. I and Papanui I (both 32).

If the division one outcome was clearcut, there were close finishes to the other three divisions and so close are they that some previous results will have to be checked before the placings can be officially declarea. However, it appears as though Fendalton II has taken division II with 46 points, one more than Woolston Park I. Canterbury I was third with 42 and Papanui II and Beckenham I ’ were equal fourth on 41.

Hoon Hay II finished two points ahead of Halswell in division three — 40 points to 38. Christchurch-Richmond M.S.A. II and Riccarton W.M.C. II came with late runs to share third, on 36, and Rangiora 111, on 35, was a point up on St Martins I . and Spreydon 11. Beckenham II may have got up in the last stride- to win division four, although this is the grade in which there is some doubt about the points. Provisionally Beckenham II finished with 46, Riccarton Racecourse II 45 and Papanui V and Fendalton V both 44.

The Manning Cup developed into an interesting David and Goliath contest and it was David.

in the shape of the small country club, Rakaia, which held on for victory. It, on unchecked results, finished some six points ahead of the biggest club in the centre, Burnside. Papanui was third, going into Saturday's last round and it probably held this placing. Spreydon I has won the junior fours. It was left as the only unbeaten team when Hornby W.M.C. was beaten 19-18 on Saturday. .. The champion Spreydon team was Ash Woodham, Terry Darby, Ron Matheson and Dave Copefs). A play-off will be necessary in the Robinson Shield. Three teams went through the seven rounds unbeaten — Burwood 11, St Martins II and Woolston W.M.C. I.
