PUBLIC RELATIONS SMITHS SOIL INDUSTRIES LTD For Immediate Release ITS TIME TO REPOT YOUR ORCHIDS By this time your orchids have finished flowering and are preparing to send up next year's flower spikes. It is this time when your prized plants are in the best condition for subdividing or repotting. With smaller plants one can normally "pot up" to a larger pot. Ensure the new pot is clean and sterile. If it has been used before it would be advisable to sterailize the pot. Your garden centre will advise you on a safe procedure. You should also purchase a reputable brand of orchid mix, preferably one containing bark and pumice with a good balance of fertilizers including controlled release fertilizers and trace elements essential to healthy plant growth and good blooms. Water your orchids well before removing from the existing container. Partially fill the new container with your new orchid mix to a level which wo'uld allow the top of bulbs to be above the top of the container. Completely fill the container while supporting the orchid. Pat the orchid mix lightly but firmly around the root system and water thoroughly. Do not place your repotted orchid in direct sunlight. If you are dividing your mother plants, again water well before removing from the container. Remove carefully from the container and separate into more suitable sizes. The bulbs are best separated by hand, particular care being taken in separating the roots. Any utensils used should be sterilized prior to moving on to the next plant. Trim the old dead roots off with some sharp scissors. These too should be sterilized before use and prior to moving on to the next plant. Methylated spirits is useful for this. ’ . V Partially fill the new container with orchid mix. Hold the division in place in the new container and roots are straight, carefully fill the container. Lightly press the orchid mix around until the orchid is secure and supporting itself. ‘ , Water thoroughly and place in a cool shaded place. Care must be taken in selecting the orchid mix. Points to note are: 1. Is the mix sterilized? A pre sterilized mix reduces the risk of plant loss through disease. 2. Does the mix contain fertilizers? Controlled release fertilizbrs are good because they release plant nutrients in small amounts so that they are absorbed by the plant and not lost. 3. A mix containing a fungicide does help protect from root rot caused by pythium and phytophthora. 4. Trace Elements added to the mix ensure that your orchid is healthy and improves bloom quality. These normally occur in minute quantities. When selecting an orchid mix, size of pack is important: - A "medium bag contains at least 10 litres and will repot one or two plants. A "carrypack'' of 22 litres is suitable for up to 7 plants. A "superpack" of approximately 50 litres will repot up to 15orchids. These figures, of course, depend on container size and plant size. Key points again — ■ Select a good orchid mix. • Make sure all utensils are clean and sterile.
