Softball squad

The Canterbury men’s softball squad has been whittled down to 13 players for the Rothmans national tournament which will begin at Fraser Park, Lower Hutt, on December 27.

Jamie Waratini and Garry Bishop have both been dropped from the squad which convincingly won the South Island tournament for the Jefferies Cup 10 days ago. The representative coach, Mr Tom Hurinui, opted to retain the utility player, Maia toa. Mr Hurinui said that the pitching battery is “the key to success” and, if necessary he will use the brilliant short-stop, Michael Hall, on the mound to relieve Robert (Chub) Tangaroa and Colin Sutherland. “With ‘Jimmy’ as a back-up I can afford to work the other two pretty hard.”

Although both the manager, Mr Leon Fife, and the coach himself have been playing senior A softball in Christchurch this season Mr Hurinui said there was no intention of either of them taking the field in Lower Hutt.

The full squad is: Tangaroa, Sutherland, Hall; Simon Heath, John Daly; Graeme Anderson, Maia Toa, Murray Lanini, Paul McFarlane; Mark McFarlane, Kevin Steel, Ray Marsh; Eric Tomlinson.
