Hoi Polloi star of training
Special correspondent Palmerston North Hoi Polloi provided the highlight of training on a wet morning at Awapuni yesterday. Despite the rain, the No. 1 grass remained fast. The plough was slow for the limited amount of fast work which was on it. Hoi Polloi showed himself to be in top order for the Huia Handicap at Otaki when he ran easily over 1000 m in Imin 1.65, the last 600 m in 38s. He has not raced for more than a month but comes in fresh and seems set for a big effort. Taipeh indicated that he
could be hard to beat in the Otaki Stakes by running a smart 800 m in 50.15, the last 600 m in 37.75. A race rival, Kore, was not after fast time in running her 600 m in 38.85. Avarow, a leading contender for the Huritini handicap, was restricted to a more leisurely trial than that which saw her run such a smart time on Tuesday. Though not much above three-quarter pace, she ran her 600 m in 38.75. Miss Joanne, which is in the same race, partnered Desert Sabre over 1000 m in Imin 6s, the final 600 m in 39.25. ,
