Greyhound race
Sir,—The greyhound club would be wise to advise punters what to expect in future if the fiasco which occurred last Friday night happens again. I am reterring to the slowing of the lure down the back straight during race six. In my opinion the chances of the leading greyhounds were affected. Fining the hare driver $2O is not good enough. The
race should have been abandoned and all the bets refunded.—Yours, etc., O. C. VICKERY. November 26, 1981.
[Mr G. Kingston, secretary of the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club, replies: “The Stipendiary Steward’s report on the race in question was as follows: The lure driver was charged under Rule 304 with negligence in that he allowed the leading dog to get within one metre of the lure instead of the regulation five metres. The driver’s explanation was that damp grass clippings had interfered with the electric drive on the rail thus nor enabling the lure to respond as quickly as usual. The explanation was accepted but the driver was reminded of his duties which includes keeping his equipment in perfect racing order and was therefore fined $2O for negligence.”]
