Injured youth flown to Chch
An Invercargill youth institution trainee, who had suffered head and back injuries when he dived into the shallow end of a swimming pool on Wednesday, was flown to Christchurch by air ambulance yesterday. The youth, Brent ’ Stuart, aged 17, of Dunedin, was reported to be in a comfortable condition in the spinal unit at Burwood Hospital last evening. The accident happened about 5 p.m. on Wednesday while Mr Stuart was swiming in the institution’s pool with three, other youths, under the supervision of an officer.
Three of the youths were in the deep end of the, pool (3.6 metres). It was;' only when the officer heard a splash that he realised that Mr Stuart had dived into little more than a metre of water at the shallow end of the pool.
An ambulance was called immediately. The superintendent of the. Invercargill youth institution, Mr Charles Hood, said last evening that he was “perfectly satisfied” that there had been adequate supervision of trainees at the pool. '
