Speedway programme

Woodford Glen Speedway has planned an exciting Christmas holiday programme which will continue to the end of January. The first special holiday meeting, at 8 p.m. on Sunday,

December 27, is expected to attract a lot of local saloons to set them up for the following Wednesday’s championship, and is bound to include many super saloons. The South Island Saloon

Championship, at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30, is expected to attract at least 40 top-line super saloon entries; and will feature Peter Woods, Don Black, Norm Butler and other top drivers from every track of the South Island. Some of the high-class cars will be valued between $15,000 and $25,000. The Coca-Cola Saloon 500 event at 8 p.m. on Saturday,' January 2, is expected to attract 30 to 35 entries in the spectacular 50-lap, 20-minute endurance race.

The New Zealand Sportsman Championships at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, is a relatively new form of speedway racing which has become popular in Auckland and Rotorua. Glen Free, of Rotorua, who has won the New Zealand title four years in a row, will appear with a

brand new 1981 Corvette Stingray featuring a full fibre-glass body. The other drivers will include eight or 10 from the North Island, and about 18 from the South.

All-class race programmes have been scheduled for 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, and Saturday, January 16 and 23.

The last meeting before the end of the school holidays, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, January 30, will be a full variety programme featuring the annual grudge clash between the Christchurch and Nelson stock car teams. The evening also features the Coca-Cola firework display.

“These stock car clashes are renowned as fairly destructive, with a couple of the cars ending up on the wall,’’ says the promotions manager of Woodford Glen Speedway, Doug Smith.
