Special teachers to be protected
PA Wellington Teachers of children with special needs have been told by the Government that their jobs will continue. A total 220 teachers are appointed to meet the special needs of primary school pupils throughout New Zealand. Among the children as-' sisted are those who have English as a second, language. Children experiencing difficulties in such subjects as language, reading, and mathematics are given help. The first move to create a
reserve of special-needs teachers was made in 1976 when the Government employed 200 teachers above the scheduled staff of schools. This was increased in 1978 to 220 and has. been maintained at that level. Announcing the continued appointments, the Minister of Education (Mr Wellington) said the 220 teachers were in addition to the recent decision to protect up to 458 teachers whose positions would have become surplus next year because of falling rolls.
