Richmond defeats Wheke

Kevin Steel, the Richmond captain, led the way with four safe hits in as many turns at bat when his team soundly beat Wheke, 9-3, in senior A men’s softball at Linfield Park last evening. Steel hit three one-base hits and a big three-bagger over centre-field (ruled a blocked ball) for his perfect 1000 average. He crossed the home plate three times. Richmond well and truly avenged an earlier 12-5 loss to the same team by pouring on 10

hits in the six turns at bat it needed. One run came in the bottom of the first innings, three in the second, four more in the fourth, and one in the sixth. The Richmond cause was helped by some poor Wheke fielding. Wheke itself scored through Colin Dixon and Alex Bennett in the top of the fourth and Paul Finlay in the seventh. Progress points:—A.G.C. United 26, Noel Leeming Burnside 24, Papanui 14, Lyttelton 12, Western Suburbs 12, Wheke 6, Wilson Neill Richmond 6, Albion 2.
