Rubbish tip fire

Christchurch firemen spent three hours fighting a fire at a rubbish -tip in McTeigues Road yesterday morning. The fire, which . started about 9 a.m., marked the start of what firemen refer to as the “dump fire seasqn.” In the six months to May this year, 151 calls to rubbish dumps were received at Fire Service headquarters in KiL more Street. Fighting the fires cost 1576 man-hours, and tied up 135 Fire Service vehicles. The cost to the taxpayer was more than $35,000. Convinced that inadquate management of private tips is the main problem, the local branch of the Fire Brigades Union is pressing for stricter legislation governing private tips. Yesterday’s fire was attended by three engines.
