Women members ‘success’

PA Wellington The increase in the number of women members of Parliament was the only success story of the General Election, 'according to the Women’s Electoral Lobby. The election result has prompted W.E.L. to call for proportional representation and “radical change” in Parliament’s timetable. The Government has not been given a clear mandate on its energy programme and the country needs immediate Parliamentary consideration of the economy, said a W.E.L. press statement. “Without reform, power remains with the Executive and not in the hands of the people, taking us further away from the original concept of parliamentary democracy.” said W.E.L.
