Thanksgiving for Jessie Mathews

NZPA staff correspondent London The stars of international show business gathered at the actors' church in Covent Garden on Monday for a service and thanksgiving for the life and work of Jessie Mathews, who toured New Zealand three times. Jessie Mathews was Britain's song-and-dance superstar in the 1930 s and in the 1960 s was radio's “Mrs Dale" to seven million daily listeners. She died from cancer in August at the age of 74. after

eight months in hospital. She toured New Zealand in , 1952-53, when she starred in ! “Larger Than Life”; in 1956- I 57, when she starred in “Janus”: and in 1958-60. when she also ran her own drama school in Melbourne. Her biographer, Michael Thornton, has signed a contract to write a stage musi- j cal based on her rise from I humble beginnings in Soho's ; Berwick Market to inter- : national stardom. The musi- j cal, to be entitled “Jessie", will open in York next year : and will come to the West : End soon afterwards. j
