South Canterbury successful

South Canterbury beat North Canterbury by two wickets in a first round elimination match in the 1981-82 Cyclone cricket series for the Hawke Cup played at Dudley Park, Rahgiora at the week-end. In an exciting finish South Canterbury batted solidly and capitalised on the -bed bowling and fielding of North Canterbury. Four catches went through the hands of North Canterbury's John Davies. Davies had earlier top scored in the match by making 158 before being bowled by David Gudsell. North Canterbury's hopes of winning were high in the last 20 overs, as South Canterbury's tail end batsmen fell in quick succession. But South Canterbury, "hung on to overtake North Canterbury’s first innings of 302 and win with 305 for eight.

Larry Williams and Phil d’Auvergne, gave South Canterbury an impressive start with Williams .making 81 before being caught by Chris Abbott, and d’Auvergne made 82 before being caught by the wicket-keeper, Peter Williams. Apart from Davies the only other North Canterbury batsmen to reach double figures were Colin Hight who made 64, and Hugh Wright who made 13. Gudsell troubled North Canterbury and took seven wickets for 51 runs. South Canterbury will now meet Southland in the second elimination match at Invercargill next week-end. Scores were: North Canterbury 302. (Davies 158, Hight 64. Hugh Wright 13;. Gudsell 7/51) lost to South Canterbury 305/8 (Williams 81. dAuvergne 82, J. Haggart 30. K. Gloag 34. J. Varcoe 34. B. Ward 15; Hight 2/ 67).
