Ellesmere, Ashley win

Ellesmere and Ashley had good wins in the second round of the Senior Shield representative cricket series. Last season’s shield winner, Ellesmere beat Hurunui on the first innings and won the bonus points in a low scoring match. G. Jones of Ellesmere top scored with 37 runs. In an exciting bowling display for Hurunui, R. Fulton took four wickets for only five runs off four overs. M. Loffhagen bowled tenaciously for four for 47 off 20 overs. Ellesmere’s M. Taylor challenged those performances by taking four wickets for 15 runs off 16 overs of medium pace inswing bowling, including nine maiden overs. D. Campbell was effective, too. with his left arm medium pace inswing to get three wickets for three runs off seven overs, five of them maidens. Ashley won first innings points and bonus points against Malvern. J. Shipley was the only Malvern batsman to cope adequately with tight Ashley medium pace bowling by J. Davies and R. Merrin.
