Contract for N.Z. Steel
PA Auckland New Zealand Steel. Ltd. has secured a further European export contract. The company has negotiated a contract worth more than $4 million to supply steel billets to a West German company, . Ferrostaal A.G., which has proposed a joint venture with New Zealand Steel to market billet and slab products from the local steelmaker’s stage one expansion.
Production of the order is planned for early next year, with shipment in March or April. New Zealand Steel said because the contract was won in the face of the fierce competition prevailing on the world steel market, it was not disclosing the price and tonnage involved.
However, both were regarded as satisfactory considering depressed demand, it said. The contract is the first to the West German company and comes after a similar order to Europe earlier this year. A New Zealand Steel spokesman said the contract brought the total value of direct export bookings for all products this financial year to more than S66M, about SI4M more than last year. The total value of direct exports in the past eight years would be more than S4()OM when expressed in 1981 dollars, he said. If exports by other local manufacturers using New Zealand Steel products were included, this figure would exceed S6OOM.
