Mudslide toll

NZPA-Reuter Rio de Janeiro At least 43 people have died and another 700 have been left homeless after flooding and mudslides caused by torrential rains in the Rio area, according to State fire department officials. Hardest hit were the mountain resort cities of Petropolis and Teresopolis, the officials said, which accounted for most of the victims. The two cities have been cut off from Rio by mudslides, and the authorities fear more victims may be found when rescue teams can reach more isolated areas. ■ In Rio, three deaths were reported after rivers overflowed and some hillside slum shacks, fell down. Main highways leading to and from Rio, de Janeiro were blocked by mudslides. The local airport for shuttle flights to Sao Paulo, the country’s biggest city, was forced to close, but it reopened when the rain eased later yesterday morning.
