Bigger fare bill ‘unlikely’

Parliamentary reporter An increasing air fares bill for members of Parliament to ensure their presence in the House next session is not likely, the Clerk of the House (Mr C. P. Littlejohn) has said. The Government and Opposition Whips expect a difficult job rallying members of the House to vote, and denying leave for electorate and speaking engagements to keep voting numbers up. But the Clerk of the House does not think there will be any increase next year in the $2.1 million spent last year on members' travel, transport. and communications. Rather than extra payments to fly members hastily back to the House for voting, it was more likely that Whips would restrict leave, so that there were fewer flights altogether. Mr Littlejohn said. The Government Whips will be selected by the caucus before Christmas.
