Within the Southern South Island there is a substantial horticultural export potential, predominantly in the areas of pip and stone fruit production. blackcurrants and asparagus. In the area of apple production particularly there is a need to assess varieties of red delicious apples, their colour suitability and more efficient production systems. The successful applicant would be expected to co-ordinate research programmes throughout the region and to co-operate closely with DSIR personnel at the Clyde Research Orchard. It is envisaged that research programmes undertaken will be both on that orchard and also on farmers' properties. SCIENTIST FISHERIES RESEARCH DIVISION Vacancy No. 7002 THE FISHERIES RESEARCH DIVISION requires a scientist to head its Fisheries Statistics Unit. The unit has the responsibility for the collection and processing of statistics and EDP methods is required and applicants should have a high level of skill in at least one area. The minimum educational requirements are an honours degree in statistics, computing or a related subject. It is expected that the successful apnlicant will have had at least 10 years work experience involving one of these subjects. A salary of up to $27,589 may be paid for this position. LOCATION: Biometrics, Palmerston North. OFFICER RESPONSIBLE TO: D. F. Wright. QUALIFICATIONS: Hons or equivalent degree in statistics and computing. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Statistical computing consultant. Supervision of a statistical Laboratory which covers organisation of duties of junior technical staff, advising on the use of statistical and other software, assisting users of the Ministry’s computer network. SCOPE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (1) To be competent in the processing of data. Knowledge of a Prime network and associated software such as GENSTAT, MINITAB, and other similar packages. The position also requires skills on programmable calculators and other smaller computing devices. From time-to-time computer programs will need to be developed or adapted. (2) A critical feature of the position is the ability to work with other people, in the sense of organising and supervising the daily tasks of junior staff and in- advising and assisting other staff of the Ministry in the use of computing equipment and its associated software. (3) A general knowledge of, and interest in, agriculture.
