Official report and prices

For a number of categories of wool the market was better at the Christchurch sale yesterday, according to the official report on the auction issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the New Zealand Woolbuyers' Association. Compared with the last fine wool sale at Dunedin on November 19 Merino fleece was described as being in buyers' favour, extra fine and fine Halfbred fleece firm, medium to extra strong Halfbred Vz per cent dearer. Halfbred woolly hogget firm and Halfbred skirtings and oddments unchanged. The coarser wools were compared with the Auckland sale last Friday. Fine crossbred was up to 2'2 per cent dearer, medium and strong crossbred irregular and inclined in buyers' favour, crossbred woolly hogget in sellers' favour, crossbred second-shear nominally in sellers' favour, crossbred skirtings in sellers' favour and crossbred oddments unchanged. The report said that trade interest was quite widespread, the principal buyers being China. Japan, and Western Europe. up to the halfway point, the Wool Board had only given limited support to the market bidding on 8 per cent of the

offering and having 2.5 per cent of the wool either sold or passed to it. The offering was of 28.246 bales. It was drawn mainly from the Canterbury Plains and Marlborough. Halfbred shorn hogget wool was prominent in the selection, but for style and yield it was not comparable with wool sold at the previous sale. This was also the case with the woolly hogget wool, much of which w’as tender and unattractive. Autumn drought conditions showed up very strongly in the ewe wools, which were’ mainly short, tender and poor yielding. Hunger fineness was also evident, but this was of some advantage in the prices obtained. On the other hand Merino wools showed up quite well for style and quality. Quite a number of lots were’64/70s and finer and with adequate length and good colour. The following is the official range of prices issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers' Association.— Extra fine Merino. 70s and finer:
