Westland parks
Sir,—Preservation of life means timber and people. We, the people of South Westland, are being made to suffer because of the decision of Mr Venn Young and Dr lan Shearer to add South Okarito and Waikukupa State Forests to the Westland National Park. We realise they also have been pressured into this decision by conservationists. We are being asked to turn our community into a ghost or shantytown for tourists. We have a very good sawmill that will have to close because conservationists want to lockup valuable timber for national parks. They already have 80 per cent of the land in Westland. The people of the West Coast have for many years supported the people of Canterbury. Our coal, gold, and timber have helped the people of Canterbury a great deal. The help of sawmillers, farmers and people in the business sector is needed to help these small communities fight this Government decision made just to collect votes. The elections are over, the votes nearly counted, but our Government must stand up and be counted. We can still have our beauty with forest parks.— Yours, etc., L. D. ORCHARD. December 1, 1981.
