Bus services
Sir.—P. G. Clark’s concern at the wastage of oil and overseas funds pleases me for I have known for some time that it is necessary to conserve world oil supplies. When I gave a figure for the weekly supportive rate to the Transport Board it was to clarify and not confuse the issue. "The Press” editorial (November 26) said: “Dissatisfied ratepayers have a partial solution in their own hands. By using the buses they get something back for their money in the form of a fare of which they have paid more than half already.” Now if more people used the buses, there would probably be less reason to raise money from rates. Diesel exhaust fumes contain no lead and little carbon monoxide and this freedom from lead is most important.
Lead blood levels are too high in Christchurch children already, and much lead comes from" car exhausts—Yours, etc., PATRICK NEARY. December 2, 1981.
