; For October, the first month of i the Lyttelton Harbour Board's I new financial year, the board ; incurred a total loss of 45.532 i tonnes of cargo, as compared ! with October a year ago, accordi ing to the board's general manai ger, Mr J. A. McPhail. I However, even though October ] was a “light” month, the board ! expects the usually slow months iof November and December to (show good returns. • ■ Imports, both coastal and : overseas, were down during i October, as were overseas exports. Coastal exports showed i only a slight increase for the ■ month. November container toninage and a large shipment of :coal to Korea earlier this week I should put the port well ahead by the end of the calendar year. ■ Interestingly, roll-on cargo be- ; tween Lyttelton and Wellington i and Auckland showed increases tin October, again’ reversing a • trend which has existed for the ; last few months. i From October 1 to November : 23. a total of 80 vessels used the port of which 25 were coastal. 37 ■ overseas, and 18 inter-colonial, i said the Harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Barbour. ; The total represented five fewer ships than in the same period a year ago with a conse- , quent decrease in total net regisI tered tonnage. ! In the period.
