N.Z. climbs alcohol consumption ladder
NZPA London New Zealand has made one of the biggest advances in the spirit drinkers’ stakes of the “World Drinkers’ League” ladder, issued by a weekly magazine, “Harper’s Wine and Spirit Gazette.” It boosted consumption by 2.23 litres of pure alconol, to go up five places to fifteenth on the world ladder. The leading four, as usual, were all from the Communist bloc — Poland. East Germany, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. Polish consumption was an impressive 5.5 litres of pure alcohol. Consumption of beer in
New Zealand has also in•creased but it retains its ninth position. The "Drinkers’ League” ladder is based on figures compiled by a Dutch statistical office. The beer table for 1980 showed that New Zealand increased its average percapita consumption by 700 millilitres to 118.7 litres. The top three in the world were West Germany, Czechoslovakia, and East Germany, the same as last year, with 145.7 litres. 137.8 litres, and 135 litres respectively. Australia was leurth with an average per capita intake of 134.2 litres.
In wine-drinking, Australians made a notable advance. Consumption rose from 16.5 to 17.4 litres a bean, and Australia moved up one place to eighteenth on the ladder. France (93 litres) and Italv retained their first two positions, but Argentina ousted Portugal from third spot. New Zealand was placed twenty-third tor the second year in succession with consumption put at 11 litres a head. England slumped to tenth in the beer tame, and twenty-eighth in spirits while retaining thirty-second position in wine, with consumption rising slightly.
