Wheat rust effects

Wellington reporter Indications are that with warmer weather the effect of the yellow stripe rust on spring-sown wheat in the South Island may not be too severe, and predictions remain for wheat, and barley crops generally to be above average this season, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. But another outbreak of the rust has been confirmed in the North Island, this time in a specimen of Hilgendorf wheat from Masterton. The D.S.I.R. research area remains the only confirmed infection in Manawatu. Surveys are under way to determine the full extent of the infection in both areas.
