Children’s books
Books with holes in the pages? But the idea works well for children's reading material. Apart from creating initial interest in the book, the holes allow a child to see what is about to happen and as the page is turned, to see what has happened. This makes it an easy and natural progression for the child. The publisher, Child’s Play (International), Ltd, has put out a series of books illustrated by Pam Adams. Ghosts, magic, daydreams, nursery rhymes and the alphabet have all been used as subjects. The shapes, colours and subjects are also designed to capture the child’s imagination. They serve as good development books for children and will appeal to a wide age group. The cost of these books varies from about $3 to $6, and they are available from the Children’s Bookshop in Sydenham. A similar styled book is “Peepo," available through Every Educaids, Ltd. Inspired by the game that adults everywhere seem compelled to play with a baby, “Peepo,” costs $11.95, and is a hard-cover book. All the details of a young child's day are included — father sleeping, mother making breakfast, and brothers and sisters playing. Especially for children at Christmas, Educaids has the New Zealand version of “Twelve Days of Christmas.” “A Pukeko in a Ponga Tree,” adapted by Kingi M. Ihaka, is beautifully illustrated, and
is available in hard cover, at $9.95. Another Christmas book is “The Nativity,” by Borje Svensson. This is a pop-up book featuring material from the Metropolitian Museum of Art in New York. The book opens up to form a nativity picture — figures of angels, shepherds and . the three kings make up a traditional
