Auckland wraps up title

PA Blenheim Auckland completed its domination of the national under-22 cricket tournament in Blenheim yesterday, with its fifth consecutive win. Bolstered by an unbeaten century by the opener, Richard Brazendale, Auckland rattled up the week’s highest score of 272 for 5 from 66 overs against Otago, and then proceeded to dismiss the first three opposing batsmen for only two runs. Russell Mawhinney and Neil Muir halted the slide with a fourth-wicket stand of 82 but the southerners never looked likely to round off

their disappointing week with a win. The unpredictable Canterbury side slumped to a 59run loss against Central Districts, whose fast bowler, Derek Stirling, took seven for 17 from 16 hostile overs. The Wellington opener, Ron Hart, carried his team through to a comfortable win over Northern Districts with an unbeaten century in the other match. Final points: Auckland 30, Northern Districts 18, Central Districts and Wellington 15, Canterbury 12, Otago 0. The Auckland opener, Trevor Franklin, won the Ken Simich Cup for player of the tournament after an ag-

against a Nelson-Marl-borough combined team in Blenheim today. The rest of the squad is Trevor Franklin (Auckland), Anup Nathu (Wellington), Martin Crowe (Auckland), David Boyle (Canterbury), Rod Latham (Canterbury), Grant McKenzie (Central Districts), lan Fisher (Auckland), Nigel Scott (Auckland), James Swift (Auckland), Shaun Tracey (Auckland), David White (Northern Districts). The twelfth man will be named before the match. The local team will be captained by Jock Edwards and includes several other Central Districts representatives.
