Poise sprints fast at Trentham
Special correspondent Wellington Poise. John Wayne and Cabinet, all locals.’ showed speed at Trentham yesterday morning, while Majestic Sky advanced his claim for the Discovery Handicap, with a solid effort. Just about all fast work was done on the outside of the course proper, which remains very fast. Poise showed her customary dash when she came to the finish of 800 m in 48.4 sec. the last 600 m in 34.4. She failed last week, but is holding her condition well. David Walsh will ride her in the Adventure (1400 m this week and the distance could suit. The same could be said for John Wayne, which tried 1000 m last week and was third. Yesterday John Wayne worked over 800 m in 48.6 sec. and he came to the finish of the last 600 m in 34.2. He looks well and will be hard to beat.
Cabinet was even quicker over 600 m. He took an easy 54.1 sec from the 800. but showed brilliance to end with 34.1. One of his rivals in the Lyall Handicap is the filly. Peg Starmose. which attracted attention when ending 800 m down the chute in 49.8 sec. the last 200 m in 12sec. A filly by Balkan Knight, she has won two of her three races and last week set a 1000 m track record at Te Awamutu Majestic Sky and Arzante began from the top of the straight. The 2000 m took 2min 18.245ec. the last 1600 m in Imin 43sec. the 800 m 51. and the 600 m 37. with Majestic Sky just in front at the end and holding out his companion. which was ridden out in the straight. It was good work by Majestic Sky. which had no luck at all when he tried the Heretaunga Handicap last week.
