Paraplegics to conquer Strait
PA Wellington “Operation Sniff” is not to be sneezed at. . : The “Southern North Island Floating Fools” have declared their intention to conquer Cook Strait. Their departure date will depend on the weather. All four are paraplegics. Their spokesman, Mr Michael O'Brien, of Masterton, said that with their specially built craft, the four would cross the. Cook Strait in less than six hours. The craft is a catamaran type/ with provision for four wheelchairs.- The crew will move the craft by ‘ using
hand-driven pedals. After a practice near Wellington, Mr O’Brien said that the boat went twice as fast as had been expected. The attempt is to help raise funds for disabled groups in the lower North Island, by a raffle. The winning number will be deter- . mined by the number of pedal revolutions made during the trip. Mr O’Brien’s fellow crewmembers are Mr Paul Curry, of Wellington; Mr Paul Chambers, of Napier,. a national swimming representative at paraplegic Olympics; and Mr Jim Savage, of Central Hawke s Bay.
