‘Discounts’ alarm institute
< “Discount” prices, for sewing machines are alarming the Consumers’ Institute. The institute’s director, Mr R. J. Smithies, said that some people were-seriously misled by “so-called” discounts. An - institute price survey had been. sent to the Examiner of;. -Commercial Practices for investigations. “Some shops jack up their prices;; first,; £ thens reduce them again and say they are giving .big discounts,” said Mr Smithies. “In fact, cusr tomers are paying normal prices or slightly less than normal prices.” One ” example was a machine reduced from $369 to $332 when the shop’s normal price was; $329. The institute's Christchurch district officer, Mr J. S. Ainsworth, blamed fierce price Competition and the importation of cheap Asian machines for the misleading tactics. Deceptive discounting was a growing practice, but most people should realise that the offers were unrealistic and shop for the best buy, he said.
