Obituary Miss M. M. Daly

Primary school music festivals in Christchurch lost a leading organiser with the death in Christchurch recently of Miss Margaret Mary Daly. Miss Daly, who was given a life membership on the final night of this year’s festival, helped organise and conduct the primary school ■ music festival for nine years. Each year Miss Daly had to audition 400 children for the special choir, as well as organising 800 to 1000 children during the August festival. Thousands of children sang under her baton.

Miss Daly, a fellow of Trinity College, London, was also a singing teacher, and last year one of her pupils, Ann Young, won the “Sydney Sun” aria competition. Miss Daly was a schoolteacher and taught at several primary schools in Christchurch, including Hoon Hay, West Melton, and Elmwood, and also at Casebrook Intermediate. This year she was deputy principal of Mairehau Primary School. Miss Daly was an active member of the Suburbs Squash club. She died of a terminal illness in her mid-30s.
