Eight new names in swimming squad
Eight new names appear in a revised New Zealand international swimming squad, released by the national selectors last evening. The squad of 24 contains the elite of the sport in New Zealand and is based on strict qualifying standards. The most significant of the new names are Anthony Mosse (Auckland) and Grant Forbes (Canterbury) who performed outstandingly on overseas tours during the New Zealand winter. Forbes improved his 200 m breaststroke on tours to California and Australia by 4sec, and to within a second of the national record. Mosse had the most spectacular improvement though. On two trips to Australia — for the national winter championships and the Brisbane mini-Games — he improved his* 200 m butterfly time by lOsec to 2min 7.6 sec. Of five new women added to the squad, three are backstrok-
ers. Carmel Clarke and Amanda Hay (Hawke's Bay) and Carolyn Morgan (Wanganui) join New Zealand's three other talented women backstrokers, Ursula Cross and Monique Rodahl (Auckland) and Melanie : Jones (Canterbury), making the stroke by far the strongest in New Zealand swimming.
