‘Week-end’ sailors blamed for mishaps
PA Wellington Boaties who get into difficulties at sea this summer may get little sympathy from those who go to assist. Captain Geoffrey Wearing, of the Ministry of Transport’s Marine Division, said that too many week-end sailors were blaming the virtually non-existent “freak wave” for mishaps when the real cause was poor seamanship and a lack of attention to boat seaworthiness and elementary safety. A report by the Water
Safety Council said the division’s reaction was prompted by a spate of boating accidents recently. Boaties were taking small boats too far out from shore, even in inclement weather, and once out to sea those in charge of vessels were not reacting well enough to changes in weather and tides. The council also warned that occasional boaties often did not give enough consideration to the state of their craft and ancillary equipment.
