His rivals will | be this year’s world chamt pion driver, Ulf Thoresen, of I Norway, two Americans, an ! Italian and three Australians. ■ The event is being staged i by the Western Australian ; Trotting Association at * Gloucester Park. ; The series will consist of > three races, all from a | mobile start, and will be run I on a points system. ! Wolfenden will drive at ■ the Thames meeting at Alexi andra Park on Saturday and I leave for Perth the next ! morning. i He said yesterday he i would be leaving Perth soon : after the last race and would i be back in Auckland in time i to drive on the second night i of the Thames meeting on ! December 12. I Wolfenden has partici- > pated in three similar events ■ in Australia. He was fourth i at Harold Park, Sydney, in ■ 1968, and won at Gloucester ; Park in 1972, and Albion i Park, Brisbane, in 1976. | His American opponents : this year are John Campbell ■ and Jim Doherty. i Campbell, who is 26, has j driven over 1100 winners for ; more than $9 million in ; stake-money. His 1980 total : of $3.73 million from 183 ! wins is a record for a driver ’ in a single season. I Doherty, who is 41, has i driven 2297 winners. Like I Campbell, he was . born in f Canada.
