Eye-catching runs at Trentham

Special correspondent Wellington A solid 1600 m by the Te Awamutu visitor, Majestic Sky and a brilliant 800 m by the local, Poise, took the eye at Trentham yesterday. Fast work took place mainly on the outside of the trial, though the plough was also in use. The going was fast in spite of overnight rain, which has taken some of the jar out of the course proper. Majestic Sky, which is trained by Graeme Sanders, had little luck when sixth in the Heretaunga Handicap on Saturday and he could improve on that effort when he tries the Discovery Handicap on Saturday. Ridden by Cliff Brierley, Majestic Sky started from the top of the straight and was working steadily enough by the 1600 m. He came from there to the end in Imin 41.975, the last 800 m in 51s and the 600 in 375. Severe interference did not give him a chance to show his best on the first day.

Poise was in full flight at the 800 m, and she finished the task in 48s, the last 600 m in 355. The mare blotted her copybook on Saturday when last of 12 in the Northland Handicap. She pulled up well enough though and she gets a chance to atone in the Adventure Handicap this week. Speed came as well from locals Mylaw, Quayside, Becamber and Cabinet. Quayside, which resumes from the Pfefferle Stable was smart over 800 m in 48.2 s the last 600 in 355. A winner last season, she looks ready to run well fresh in the Karaka Handicap. Mylaw was quick over 800 m in 48s, the last 600 m in 365. He went very fast early and was being eased down at the finish. He was third at Masterton last time. Cabinet had Becamber for company over 800 m in 48.85, the last 600 m in 36.8 s with Becamber about a long neck in front at the finish. Cabinet, which was impressive at Masterton is in the Lyall Handicap.
