Aramoana residents may be able to stay
RA . Dunedin The Otago Harbour Board would welcome any suggestion that at least some Aramoana people might be able to stay- on. in spite of smelter construction, according to the chairman of the board. Mr R. M. Hall. This aspect will be pursued with South Pacific Aluminium. Ltd. in continuing discussions on the smelter issue, he said. The smelter project engineer. Mr Charles Jamieson, earlier indicated that he had suggested to residents it might be possible for them to remain at Aramoana. Residents might be able to
shift their homes outside the site perimeter. Alternatively, the planned sewage ponds could be moved from the village area to the proposed reserve or the salt marsh. Mr Hall said it was the board's understanding that no offer was made to the residents because the company has not yet made a firm decision on such a possibility. “It would seem that with the withdrawal of the Alusuisse partner and the decision of the Caster II plant, the position could possibly be reassessed as to the heed for all Aramoana tenants to be dispossessed." he said.
